Benefits of blogging

Do you have the idea and the desire to create a blog? Before embarking on the adventure, you need to ask yourself the right questions and know where to start. Some crucial decisions must be made if you want your blog to succeed. I’ll share with you my advice before you start and to get you off to a good start.

In recent years, blogging has become a big trend in today’s society. Starting a blog in 2020 is neither expensive nor complicated. With the existing online resources that make it easy for you to create a blog, you’ll see that blogging is not as complicated as you may think. Thousands of people create a WordPress blog every day. It’s also the case for businesses.

Indeed, from the different existing online activities, blogging has become an icon of the digital age. With millions of blogs around, and plenty more created each day, this is one aspect of the internet that will be around for a long time.

Blog definition: What is a blog?

To begin with, it’s essential to understand the meaning of the word ‘blog.’

Blogs, also called weblogs, are online journals, where people express ideas, information, or aspects about a variety of things. The exact nature of the subjects will undoubtedly vary,  ranging from things like self-improvement and finance to something more personal like stories about one’s own lives or travel logs.

The Internet is expanding and growing. Moreover, there are more Internet users than ever before, which means more potential visitors for your website. In simple words, there is no better time than now to create a blog.

Benefits of blogging and why you should start a blog?

Why would you blog? Why embark on this crazy adventure that requires so much work and raises so many existential questions?

Why would you confront your fear of other people’s eyes, your fear of failure when there are already so many talented bloggers (and you feel you can’t hold a candle to them)? After all, is it still worth getting started and launching a blog today?

My answer is simple: yes, a thousand times, yes! Blog, because it will bring you an experience you don’t even know you can get. Blog, because you’ll learn a lot. Blog, because it opens the door to a world of opportunities.

Why should you start a blog? For all of the following reasons, at least!

1. Unite around a passion

For many, the answer to the question “why blog” is one word: Passion. This is not only true for amateurs but also for many professionals, for whom blogging becomes a way to gather a community around a subject they are interested in.

For a long time, the only way to meet other followers of a subject has been to turn to associations, clubs, to take an active approach to look for people who share a common interest with you.

Today, with a blog, you can bring enthusiasts to you “without even moving from your chair, without even spending a penny” as the quacks of the web would say 🙂 So it’s incredibly fulfilling and enriching!

2. Acquiring skills

A blog can be an excellent opportunity to learn or develop skills that will serve you in your career but also your personal life. It is quite possible to put your blog on your CV as long as you learn to highlight it professionally.

Indeed, having a blog allows you to develop very concrete skills in the digital world (which can go from web writing to e-mailing, SEO, web development, and so on. You will surely acquire an understanding of certain subjects that you will then be able to use in a job!

But it’s also, very often, a way to progress on the subject you address on your blog. Explaining things to other people, sometimes being in the position of a teacher, having exchanges with your readers, confronting different opinions, makes you progress enormously in your understanding and your mastery of a subject.

And then, beyond practical skills, you also very often develop organizational skills, a better knowledge of yourself and your limits, you are confronted with problems such as low motivation, fear of others’ eyes, the impostor syndrome… and you learn how to manage these obstacles, a real dynamic of personal development that can then feed your daily life.

3. Having an income supplement

If you ask me why I blog, I will never tell you to do it to make money because I am convinced that it is not a sufficient motivation to keep a blog in the long run. Even people who decide to open niche blogs with the explicit purpose of making money usually choose to do so on topics they enjoy, simply because it’s the best way to infuse emotion into its content and keep motivated in the face of the many obstacles one encounters as a blogger.

However, a blog can become a source of income, if well done a very important one… and I can understand how that can be a significant factor when you want to invest a lot in a project.

4. Freeing yourself from your emotions

Some people go through hardships or are faced with feelings and situations that they find it challenging to keep to themselves and cannot always share with those around them.

The blog then sometimes becomes an outlet that allows you to meet people who share the same feelings, or to speak with a freedom that you don’t necessarily have with those around you.

This emotional release can take many forms: confession, anger, and even humor!

5. Getting others to react

Why blog when you have strong convictions? Quite simply because the blog is a platform of expression that allows you to reach many people, a means of choice to spread your ideas, and to have an “activist” reach.

It can be an opportunity to make others aware of issues that are important to you, for example, the great blogs run by different bloggers where you can learn a lot about the environment.

6. Nurturing your creativity

Creating a blog acts as a real fuel for your creativity. You gradually get used to regular mental gymnastics to find new ideas, to challenge yourself so that you don’t fall into a routine. It’s intellectually stimulating… and I would even go so far as to say that I recommend the activity to all unemployed people!

Indeed, having a blog is a great way to stay active, to have a gratifying and fulfilling occupation that imposes a certain discipline.

7. Improve your writing style

blogging improve your writing style

A blog is not necessarily the most suitable medium for a very literature-oriented writing style, at least when you want to gain visibility. Indeed, like many digital media, it is more and more subject to the presence of search engine algorithms or social networks that decide the visibility it deserves.

These algorithms being machines, they encourage often writing simpler, adopting a common vocabulary, likely to be used by a vast majority of Internet users. So you’re going to tell me: why blog in the hope of improving one’s writing style?

Entirely only because blogging allows you to work on a variety of dimensions that you can then put to work for other literary styles, by blogging, for example, you gain fluidity, and you learn to convey ideas in a clear and intelligible way, you often experiment with different formats, you confront yourself with the gaze of an audience of readers.

8. Giving visibility to your company

A blog can also become a great traffic builder that allows you to showcase your expertise on a subject… and then find clients. Some bloggers have been able to launch their brand. Others offer services and showcase their skills through blog posts. The blog is an excellent medium to share free advice that highlights your seriousness and talent to build a bond of trust with those who may one day become your customers.

9. Exploring the potential for new business

Sometimes you want to start a business project without really knowing if it will be profitable and has its audience. Opening a blog can be a great way to test your idea, to start building an audience, and to learn over time to better understand their needs and then offer a service that is perfectly adapted to the market.

10. Working on your e-reputation

If you blog using your name, you will quickly build an online reputation that will allow people to find your blog when they search for your name. But your blog is a platform that you control, where you publish content that is relevant to you, with a freedom that you will never have on any social network.

11. Why blog? To thrive!

Blogging is based on the values of sharing, and even if the discipline has evolved a lot over the years, it is a point that remains central and essential to holding up over time. This sharing goes hand in hand with the very beneficial feeling of being useful to others.

At first glance, one might think that this usefulness only concerns tutorial blogs that help Internet users get things done… but in reality, it’s much broader! You can be useful to others because you make them think, because you make them laugh, because you inspire them because you teach them new things, and because you give them positive energy?

This utility causes a great sense of fulfillment for a blogger.

12. Blogging to set a challenge

Blogging can also be a way to challenge yourself and live it publicly. For example, you are new to a field and want to acquire expertise: your blog can become a companion where you share your learning, failures, and progress along the way.

It can be an intimate challenge: adopt a healthier lifestyle, embark on “zero waste,” fight against your anxieties, overcome a challenging period (depression, divorce, bereavement, illness, etc.). It can be a life project that you feel the need to verbalize: becoming a parent, becoming a homeowner, getting married.

All of these motivations can motivate you to share your challenges and obstacles to inspire and help others.
