Retrat de la vida quotidiana d'un matrimoni burgès que travessa una crisi de parella. A Milà, després de visitar un amic malalt terminal a un hospital, l'escriptor Giovanni Pontano (Marcello Mastroianni) acudeix a una festa per la publicació del seu darrer llibre. Mentrestant, la seva dona Lidia (Jeane Moreau) visita el lloc on va viure molts anys enrere. Després, durant la nit, tots dos acudeixen a una festa a la mansió del Sr. Gherardini, on tots dos comencen a flirtejar; Giovanni amb la filla de l'amfitrió, i la Lidia amb un playboy.
