Acabada la II Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), Matt Gordon torna a Singapur per tal de recuperar una fortuna en perles de contraban. Un cop allà, comença a recordar la que va ser la seva promesa abans de la guerra, l'atractiva Linda, i la seva desaparició durant l'atac japonès. La seva sorpresa és majúscula quan, inesperadament, la torna a veure: pateix amnèsia i està casada amb el ric terratinent Van Leyden. Mentrestant, el sinistre contrabandista Mauribus planeja quedar-se amb les perles de Matt.
